Will the Apple iPad Fit Into My Mac World?

I’m on my semi annual media fast until February 1, but I just couldn’t resist watching and listening to all of the iPad news this past Wednesday. After hearing lots of talk about this product not being exciting enough, just an iphone on steroids, or not really making a 3rd category of mobile device between smartphones and laptops, I had to throw my 2 cents out there. I have an iMac, Macbook Pro and an iPhone. Each has a very specific use in my day to day. Let me show you how that works for me, then show how I think the iPad might fit perfectly into my lifestyle, replacing some of the weaknesses of all three.

My iMac- Old faithfull and my households hub. Stays in my office and is connected to our main external hard drives. It is the center of our Apple Extreme home networking, printing and file sharing system. It’s also the main computer for our Apple TV home media system. I prefer to use its large display and stationary stability mainly for heavy work assignments like web site creation and video editing work.

My Macbook Pro- As close as I can get to a mobile iMac, this is my mobile writing studio. When the urge hits me to create, it’s there and with a 7 hr battery, I’m okay to write all over the place from backyard to park bench to passenger seat. Not just an expensive word processor. Its drive space and memory allow me to do much more with software and downloads.

My iPhone- My primary work and social phone. Who uses land lines anymore? My iPhone is of course much more. It is my ultimate portable–in my pocket info, music, and task master. It GPS voice navigates me, keeps me in touch in multiple ways, and plays all my music and audio books. Waiting in line at the DMV or anywhere else is not the same anymore.

So, with all that why an iPad? What might it do for me?

  • Web surfing- One of the first things I do in the morning, even before getting out of bed is check my email, and favorite news sites on my iPhone. I can’t tell you how many times this is repeated throughout my day. Probably more than it should actually which is why I media fast regularly to tone down those habits! As much as I love my iPhone, the small screen can sometimes be inihibiting for using the web for longer and more detailed surfing. Clicking numerous links can be a pain. Scrolling small chunks of a site can be time consuming. Inconvenience solved with the 10 inch screen of the iPad?
  • e-book reading- I’ve refused to consider what’s been out there for e-book reading mainly because of those 16 shades of gray on the display, even on the devices bookstore home pages. Yuck! Now, with the iPad, making the transistion to e-book for some titles (I still love my hands on books) will probably be more engaging. Searching and reading on the iPad seems much more likely for me. A Kindle DX is $489 and I don’t think it can really compare.
  • Portability- So what if I don’t want to carry my laptop somewhere, but a moment of writing inspiration strikes me? Pull out the super light iPad with an iWorks app and typing the next great chapter could be a breeze.
  • Emailing and social network apps like facebook and twitter- Ever try to type on any smartphone? Ever try to see full text of large emails without scrolling for days? Live blog without a laptop? Enough said.
  • Scheduling- Always loved the old time manager folios. Still buy notebook size month to month calendars. Wouldn’t need to anymore. The calendar option looks great and of course with docking would synch all my info in a great viewing size and portable product.
  • Watching movies- Looks to be much better than on my laptop, because no matter how light my laptop is, it is still bulky and eventually gets uncomfortable on my lap. Never thought the iPhone was great for full length movies.
  • Textbooks-I do see a classroom in my future where my assigned text will be available to my students on iPad versus at the bookstore. I think my students will greatly appreciate the expected lower costs since few bound copies have good resale value. Plus, who wants to carry around all of those books? I can’t wait to say, “scroll to page 174 and let’s evaluate line 45.” Cool.
  • ************************************************************************************************************************************

I could go on. So do I really need an iPad? No one really needs one, but I do want one, and it could make my days a lot neater. I imagine for those who don’t have an iPhone or iTouch and aren’t used to the capabilities, the iPad could send them into a happy Apple delirium. Which brings me to an important point. It could be a bit financially excessive to bring an iPad (or 2) into a household that is already “Mac’d out.” However, I think it would fit, and I don’t think it is a redundant product. Yet, what of those who might bring a $499 iPad into a household as a digital media option where there aren’t multiple Mac products? Score! This looks to be a great product and a great deal. Seems clear to me that it does make a 3rd category between smart phones and laptops and seems like it will do it well.

I agree with you 100% I think that this will become one of those products we didn’t think we needed until it’s huge and everyone wants one. The iPhone when it first came out (without the apps) basically everyone I know said who wants to spend that much money on a phone just because it can go on the internet and it’s so small and so many complaints now they all have one or planning on it for the 4g. But it slowly got popular pop culture did it’s thing Apple made some adjustments and now it defines them. I will be getting an iPad I am sure of it I read a LOT of online media and having my laptop resting on my laps for hours can get like you said very uncomfortable. I will however wait (if I can be patient) for the second generation, but I am so excited to have all of my university books in one little iPad (hopefully in-book editing and the ability to attach notes to specific text will be added in the second gen at LEAST to textbooks)

Agreed Ryan…I think after a while even the name will become more associated with Mac vs. sanitary napkins :) Apple knows what they’re doing. I see so many blogs and such talking about what it doesn’t have. Wonder if they are being paid by the competition? ;)

From a business sense, why would Apple put certain things that are repetitive and then knock out their other product sales? Or new iPad sales with 2nd gen? I brought the iPhone 1st gen and was fine with updates until the 3Gs and then I moved. That was like 2 years later and it was time for a new phone. And the flash issue? If Apple does it the way I think they will we won’t remember what Flash was…just like Window Media Player. It will all be Quicktime!
