Oprah Says Her All Time “Favorite Thing” is the iPad. 10 Reasons Why It’s Mine Too

My iPad--safe in its Dodo case

Yes it's called Dodo, but it's a beautiful and functional case that looks like a Moleskin notebook.

Finally got around to a day of DVR’ing and watched Oprah’s Favorite Things show. A joyous thing to see grown-ups become kids again. I won’t be cynical at all. I just enjoyed the show. On day two of her Favorite Things episodes, Oprah began the giving by announcing her all time “favorite thing.” Wow, what could that be? The iPad? Amazing. I was thinking the same thing Oprah! I get asked about my iPad all the time. Is it a laptop replacer? No. Isn’t it just a big iPhone? No. It’s it own thing and what a thing it is. Why do I love my iPad? Let me count the ways. Click on the images for better views of actual screenshots from my iPad.

1. Books- Okay, technically they’re e-books, but I find that I read more on my iPad. In fact, the only hard copy books I buy now are those that are unavailable by e-book format or those that are special in some way and I want them in hard copy. I now find my hard copies sit bedside longer. My e-books are read quickly. Something about not seeing how many pages I have left to read keeps me committed. I also love being able to highlight passages, look up words in the dictionary, search for key words, type NEAT notes within the text, and place e-bookmarks. The iBook store is always open. So is Amazon’s Kindle store. Both are apps that make sure I have a large selection of books. A devilish way for me to hide my book purchases! Oh and the often talked about issue of not seeing text in bright light? I just move out of it. Problem solved.

2. Magazines- Love reading my favorites on my iPad. I use the app Zino for free and purchased content. The magazines are bright and realistic. I’m able to increase the page content size, and flipping forward and back through pages to continue articles is a thing of the past. All I need to do is touch the hyperlinked “continued on page 24,” and I’m taken there. Click on websites in text and the pages open in Safari. Many magazines come with special interactive features and content. Better than print!

3. Organization- I use the To Do app and create a virtual schedule book, synched with my calendars that rivals any Day Planner I used to have. The Evernote app allows me to clip websites I come across and pull them all up for quick view. All evernote clips are synched across my iMac, Macbook Pro and iPhone so I never lose anything.

4. Movies- I can download a few movies off my iMac in anticipation of a trip. Or, with my Netflix app and membership I can watch movies and TV series instantly.

5. Social Media- social media apps made for the iPad are much better than those on smart phones or even laptops. They work much smoother. The “Friendly for Facebook” app allows you to stay logged in to up to four facebook pages (password protected) so I can toggle back and forth between my private and business pages. The Twitter app lets me send quick tweets and lets me gain fast info about followers with links and home pages.

6. Travel- I can keep track of all my Expedia travel itineraries on a clear, large screen. I can check in my spots on Gowalla and see my earned travel pins. I can text for free using the Text+ app, and call people on Skype.

7. Cooking and Cookbooks- Several apps allow me to have access to thousands of recipes, many with how to videos attached. I set the iPad up in the kitchen and I can take my favorite recipes anywhere to share with friends and family.

8. Blogging and Writing- I can write and edit my blogs on my iPad, and publish them with images included. I use the wordpress app for this. If I’m working on an essay, I can simply open the pages app and get started. When I finish the piece I can save it, or send it by email. I can also open email documents that are sent to me. I keep a password-protected journal, and with the Penultimate app and a pogo pen, yes you can write on the iPad.

9. Work- I can do all of my online teaching on my iPad because I have access to writing apps and Safari as my web browser. I can create PowerPoint documents. I can open excel-like documents and review them. I can create grade sheets. Any video or slide presentation I want to show at conference times can be attached to audiovisual equipment and projected on larger screens for group viewing.

10. Games- People think this is what the iPad is all about but it’s not. Games are last on my list because there is just so much I do on the iPad before I even think of the games. The games are amazing and come as a bonus to an already incredible device. I play Madden 2011, Scrabble, Sidoku, Memory Tiles, Word Search, Solitaire and many more. There is an app that doubles as a game board to open and play with friends. It’s just crazy.

The most significant thing the iPad does for me is to streamline my digital experience and declutter my living space. It makes my travel footprint tiny, packing lighter, and walking around when away, far more enjoyable. No more books and magazines to carry around. I’m more organized. I can work, read, and play from this one incredible device. Add my iPhone for listening to music, or for taking crisp HD video and pictures (eliminating the camcorder and camera), and what was once several pounds of travel weight becomes mere ounces.

iPad and iPhone. My traveling and digital life enrichment buddies.

Thanks for this article on the Ipad , Spencer.

I was at the second taping of Oprah’s Favorite Things show, and I received one. I am a Mac person, I have 4 of them I use for my business, so I wasn’t sure if I should sell this Ipad to raise money for my support group, the reason I was invited to the Heroes Show/AKA Favorite Things. After reading your list of 10 reasons the Ipad is your favorite thing, I think I will keep mine instead of selling it.

    Sincerely,

    Tracey

  • Hi Tracy,

Congrats on being on the show…uh…does that mean you got the VW too!? :) The fact that you were publicly noted as a Hero is wonderful. I’m sure that there were some gifts given on that show that would/could be used to raise funds. I’m happy for your fortune and I’m sure that you will continue to do good deeds for our world! Your site is: http://www.amazingdreamspublishing.com/index.html I am loving my blogging space and finishing my memoir of which, some of the essays are posted on the blog. Seems we share topics! You might want to click “the essays” from the home page and scan a few of mine. Perhaps we will cross each others paths again! Stay in touch! Spencer

      Hey Spencer,

I did get the VW! Still IN SHOCK over that : ) I am selling quite a few of the Favorite Things to raise money for my support group. You can see them on Ebay here: http://shop.ebay.com/amazingdreamspublishing/m.html

I will check out some of your essays. I’ve got this page bookmarked : )

Thanks again for the article on the Ipad. I’m wondering how to get online with it, with WiFi vs 3G and all, but guess I will figure it out.

      • Hi Tracey,

In the iBook store on your iPad there is a free iPad e-book that will help you understand more about the iPad since they really don’t come with a manual! Not exactly sure if you have a wifi and 3G model, so I’m not sure if what I’m about to say applies to you. If you already know this, I apologize. If your home or biz has wifi set up then go to iPad settings-then wifi- then connect to your network. This works the same in places like bookstores, or hotels, airports where there is free wifi. Or wifi you want to pay for. Games, books, and many apps work without wifi so you are good in the car and places like that. btw, any iPhone car charger works with the iPad as well. Good for trips!

For 3G, as far as I remember, it’s a pay as you go situation with AT and T. I think you purchase monthly usage. But, I’ve never have had the need for that with wifi being readily available and I use my phone for anything that I’m left to need.

Thanks Spencer. The one we got is a WiFi + 3G – 32GB. All my computers are physically connected to routers at my office and home, so I have no idea if I can do the WiFi or not. I do have ATT, and was out digging around on their website in case the WiFi doesn’t work for some reason. I don’t know yet because I’m waiting to open my Ipad for Christmas–the ultimate gift from Oprah : )

A little side-note that I found amazing: during the Favorite Things taping we were all given these really great croissants to eat, and we were also supposed to get them as part of Favorite Things. Most everything we got that day was in Gift Certificate form, but there was not one for those croissants. I asked the moderator of my support group, who was also at the taping, and she had not received one either. We figured that for some reason they had gotten left out of our bags. Of course everyone I know who saw the show wanted one of those yummy croissants, but I sure as heck wasn’t going to complain to Oprah that I hadn’t gotten my gift certificate for them.

Last Thursday, almost a month after the taping, I received an Email from UPS. Those missing croissants were being overnighted to my home address, and they came the next day on dry ice! Can you imagine how much it would cost to overnight 275 boxes to all the audience? All I can say is that Oprah and her staff are amazing!

Thanks again for your help with the Ipad. I’ll let you know if I get it up and running after Christmas.
